Sledneck Invasion!

On Saturday April 4, the boys didn’t feel like skiing, which was great since there was a huge invasion of snomobile-types which caused me to park on the far side of the Lodge and walk miles to the hill!  Luckily, I charged my MP3 player on the way so I didn’t have to listen to the BRAAAAWP of those engine as they made their way up the hill.  Instead I felt the love of Bob Marley, Slightly Stoopid, Burning Spear and other classic sounds that usually accompany my skiing in my head.  It turned out to be a great day of skiing bumps and making soulful turns on my second to last day of the season.

Bloodshed on the Final Day

Time for a transfusion!

Time for a transfusion!

While riding the Calgary Lift we saw this guy recovering from a yard sale.  We also noticed that he kept touching his face as if he was bleeding from his lip or nose or something.  Well, by the time we reached the top of the hill we had forgotten about him - that is until we skied down and stopped near this big mess of bloodstained snow!  Man, it looked like a shot deer hd lay down there!!!  Hopefully he was okay, but it reminded us that you always have to be on your toes when skiing - anything can happen at any time!

One More Weekend…

April 12th, 2009

One last run ... one last weekend ....

One last run ... one last weekend ....

So after a huge weekend of hucking cliffs (Jackson and I launched them, too!) getting appreciated (cheapo guest tix and a free BBQ) and all around great skiing (the moguls were choice) we took one more run down the terrain park for the second-to-last weekend.  The next would be the finale’.

Nick’s Cliff Huck

In the spirit of Cliff Huckstable...

In the spirit of Cliff Huckstable...

Nick started hucking this little cliff when he was six or seven years old.  But he hadn’t taken it yet this season for some reason.  Then on Saturday he skied through the trees above the line and called down to me to scout the landing.  I took off my skis, checked it out, and verified that it was good.  Better than usual, in fact.  So he went for it.

I love when he does stuff like this!

Jill and Paris Ripping it up!

Jill and Paris Ripping it up!

The past two seasons, I have lent some of the boys’ old gear to my friend Jill for her daughter Paris.  From the start she was a natural!  She conquered the magic carpet and the bunny hill very quickly and she was VERY ready for the big hills.  Well, this weekend hapened to be Season Passholder Appreciation Weekend (which we very much appreciated!) and one of the perks we received was a five dollar buddy pass.  So I set Jill up so she could bring Paris up the lift.

She was awesome!  Actually I’m kinda jealous of how awesome she is with the amount of skiing she has done!  Bit then again, I guess starting when you are four instead of one-and-a-half kinda helps, too!  But she was awesome - Paris and Jill had a great time together and I think we have hooked another couple of season passholders for next winter!   The more the merrier!

Oh wait!  Forget I said that!  I would hate to see a lift line at the Ridge!

Rest In Peace Shane McConkey

A toast to honor our fallen hero with a can designed by Nick Perronteau.

A toast to honor our fallen hero with a can designed by Nick Perronteau.

Just before heading to the Ridge on Saturday morning, I recieved some shocking news.  Shane McConkey, one of greatest skiers on the planet was dead.

The shockwave ripped through the boys and I just as hard as it must have hit the rest of the ski world.  Our culture tends to revere some people as heroes even those people who we have never met.  Through film, magazine articles, web posts, etc we think we know these people and are awed by their exploits.  They almost become superhuman.

But Shane was a little different.  Sure, he did amazing things on skis, he led the way in so many ways - from getting everyone on fat skis, to designing the first powder-speciffic reverse camber ski - to ruling almost every aspect of skiing throught the years from bump contests to big air, skiercross, extreme (freeskiing, as Shane coined the phrase and founded the Professional Freeskiers Association) to being at the forefront of mixing skiing and base jumping.

It was something else that really set Shane apart, however.  It was his love of fun.  I’ve read soooo many stories in Powder and seen soo many film clips of him just having F-U-N!  From creating the caracter of “Saucerboy” the washed-up extreme saucerer, to debating whether to wear jeans or stretch pants to naked skiing to loving spread eagles while spanking his butt, Shane’s love of fun came through like no other professional skier I have ever seen.  Want proof?  Oder a dvd copy of “There’s Something About McConkey” and see for yourself.

The boys and I own that film - of our over 30 ski films, it’s right at the top of the list - it’s insanely rad - but hilariously fun at the same time.  When the boys found out that Shane had dies we immediately decided to dedicate the est of the season to his memory.  Nick said we had to drink some Red Bull (Shane’s major sponsor) and throughout the day we kept pulling moves that Shane taught us including “Aliens,” and spread eagles with crotch gabs and spanks.  It was fun - it was sad.  I thought of Shane on every run.

When we got home we watched “There’s Something About McConkey.”  Although it was somewhat sad, it still made us smile.  Later that night I watched “Steep,” another film featuring McConkey.  It mainly features Doug Coombs, however, another great skier who died much too early.

So many of our ski heros have been leaving us lately.  But we should be thankful for all the inspiration they gave us while they were here.  Thanks for the fun, Shane.  We’ll be doing spread crotch grabs for ya!

Liftie of the Year!

Only the best can bump the Helsinki chair!

Only the best can bump the Helsinki chair!

I don’t know this dude’s name, but he is just one of the stellar ‘liftie’ corps we have befriended this season at Giants Ridge.  Although they are all great, this kid has just stuck out as the best of the best.  He’s always in a great mood, eager to talk to ya about the day - always smiling and today was sharing his tunes - his stereo speakers letting us poach his Bob Marley groove.  That’s a very important part of being a liftie - too many these days are keeping their tunes to themselves - iPod earbuds under their toques.

The thing that really made me realize that he was our top liftie is that I actually had a dream with him in it!!!  Granted, he was only in it for about three seconds, but I dreamt the other night that I was riding the chair at Spirit Mountain with Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley!!  He was bumping chairs.

Pretty sad when you dream of lift operators…

Easy Like Sunday Morning…

Jackson relax'n on a run down Alta.

Jackson relax'n on a run down Alta.

The Sunday after Slush Cup, we got to the Ridge (WITH our boots) and just had a wonderful day of spring ripping!  It was terriffic!  The best part of the day was the perfectly-spaced, perfectly soft and slushy moguls!  We had such an amazing time ripping the bumps- Nick and I were really fired-up but Jackson just wanted to chill.  It had been a big weekend of skiing an by the end of the day, he didn’t wanna touch another mogul!  Guess he just wanted powder!

This is sooo Wrong!

The waves were sweet at the Ridge!

Although I am sad to see the ski season winding down, all the melting snow gets me excited for one thing - it fills the rivers for the kayaking season!!!  Yee-haw!
